Julie Howe

I am in my fifth year of teaching at Three Rivers High School in Three Rivers, Michigan. I have taught career prep courses, Adobe's InDesign, technology literacy, software applications and keyboarding. For the last three years, I have been coordinating our online learning program. I started with 8 students in Michigan Virtual High School courses. There are 258 requests from 781 students for online classes for the 2011-2012 school year. My entire schedule consists of hybrid and online learners. This year I am teaching/mentoring five periods of online learners using Michigan Virtual High School, e2020 and GenNET. My online students range from freshmen to seniors. Some are working on courses we do not offer at our school and others are working on credit recovery. Each student has individual needs. In addition to being our Online Learning Coordinator, I also assist the guidance department as a Career Prep Coordinator and will be working with freshmen and sophomores on their educational development plans.
Living on a small inland lake in Michigan, I enjoy all the seasons and changes that lake life has to offer including the challenges in my garden.
I love to read. My daughter, Emily, and I have our own little long distance book club. We share our reviews and thoughts online, in person and over the phone. We still prefer “paper” books, but we use our iPads as readers too. My son and I have a contest going on who has the latest and greatest app. Needless to say, he is winning hands down.
I love to travel. I lived in Naarden, Netherlands from 1993 to 2001 with my husband and two children because of my husband’s job. The children attended the International School of Amsterdam and I became familiar with the International Baccalaureate curriculum and program. To make the most of the educational experience of living in Europe, we would jump on a train, plane or in the car to see as much of Europe as possible during school holidays.
I love to learn and Michigan State's Master's in Educational Technology program has been very rewarding. My educational experience has shown me that I learn best in a setting that allows me the opportunity to explore, create and share new information or technology. I learn by doing. As a lifelong learner, I have realized that there can be a fine line between the wonderful challenge of “figuring it out” and being totally overwhelmed by too much information, but there are always those "light bulb" moments that keep me moving forward.
